When the automatic transmission goes out of your car, the car is virtually unusable and useless. Having the correct information about transmissions replacements will help you get your vehicle back on the road again with the peace of mind knowing you made the right choice. Vehicles built before 2000 and after 150,000 miles or so, may need new transmissions. If you can relate to this, and need a transmission for your car, you have two options: buy a manufacture brand new one or get a rebuilt one. Replacing your transmission is an expensive repair, however the exact prices will vary based on the model and make of your car and where you have it repaired.
Replacing a manual transmission in a Honda can cost around $1,000 where replacing an automatic transmission for a Mercedes can run between $3,000 and $6,500. As you can see the cost to repair a transmission can vary by the type of transmission and the car you are putting it in. The average cost to replace a manual transmission runs around $1,500 where it costs around $3,000 to replace an automatic transmission.
Depending on how old your car is, and how many miles are on it, you may want to consider buying a used transmission.
Purchasing A New Transmission
A new transmission is a dealer-direct part that would be identical to what came in your vehicle. The new transmission is built to original factory specifications. The only drawback to getting a new transmission is the cost. A new transmission can cost as much as two to three times more than a rebuilt one. However, the quality of the new transmission may be worth the price if you are going to keep your car for a longer period of time.
Purchasing A Used Transmission
Buying a used transmission may be more cost-effective if your vehicle is older with higher miles. A rebuilt transmission and a used transmission are not the same. A rebuilt will contain some old parts and new parts. Purchasing a rebuilt transmission that is built by an independent mechanic that you know and trust, is very likely a wise choice and can save you money. Don't go out and buy a rebuilt transmission just because it is cheap. If a new part in it fails, then you are right back where you started. Most independent transmission mechanics will give you a warranty on a rebuilt transmission that they rebuilt in their shop.
Shop around before you decide to buy a used or rebuilt transmission to ensure you are getting the best price. If you don't know or have a good mechanic, check on a customer-rated website like Yelp to help you locate a good mechanic. It can be a lot less money to replace your old transmission than it would be to by a new car. If the rest of your old car is in good condition then putting in a used transmission would make good sense. However, if the cost of the transmission is going to be more than what you car is worth, then you might want to look at getting a different car.
